There’s a fantastic documentary airing on Australian television about the legacy and history of the rock band Midnight Oil. Midnight Oil brought their social message to nearly every song in their repertoire, and brought it with conviction and passion and strength.
Even though the documentary hasn’t arrived in the United States – yet – here’s a trailer for it.
How powerful were Midnight Oil? At one point in time, their lead singer, Peter Garrett actually ran for and was elected to the Australian Parliament. That’s political clout.
And Midnight Oil were not averse to bringing social awareness outside of Australia. I explain this because when the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ruptured in an Alaska port in 1990, spilling millions of gallons of crude oil into the ocean and destroying the ecosystem in that region, Midnight Oil decided that maybe people should be REMINDED of this incident, even if Exxon wanted it to go away as quietly as possible.
This clip is from Midnight Oil: The Hardest Line.
Here’s another clip of the Midnight Oil impromptu concert, as seen from an unrelated interview and documentary.
Now comes the big question. Can one of you streaming services – you know, the one that I’m OVERPAYING to watch three shows a month – get this documentary and air it on your platform in the USA? Pretty please with vegemite on top?
